Pall Mall is a cigarette brand that appeared in 1899. The brand name comes from the name of a 17th century game derived from the Latin words palla and malleus – the two tools used to play it. Since the year 1907 when Pall Mall became the property of American Tobacco it has been manufactured internationally (right now by the British American Tobacco), while it is also produced by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. This was the time when certain innovations to the brand were introduced – for instance, the king-size design appeared and new techniques of stuffing tobacco into the cigarette were discovered. The logo of the brand features two lions pawing the sides of a coat of arms with an inscription «Per aspera ad astra» which can be translated as «through hardships to the stars». There is also a knight’s helmet on the top of the shield and a banner underneath it with an inscription «In hoc signo vinces» which can be translated as «by this sign shall you conquer». R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company that manufactures Pall Mall for the US market has recently changed the descriptions of Pall Mall flavor. Because of the American Food and Drug Administration’s ban on products marked as «light» and «mild» they had to change Pall Mall «Lights» to «Blue», «Ultra Lights» to «Orange», while the full flavor blend was changed to «Red».
